The Closer's Playbook

Most salespeople walk into a first meeting ready to talk. They have their best points lined up, their proof ready, their pitch polished — and within five minutes, the customer has already decided not to trust them. Not because the pitch was bad. Because the pitch came first.

Every salesperson knows the feeling. The conversation went well. The buyer nodded, asked smart questions, said the words you wanted to hear — and then nothing. No reply. No returned call. Just quiet.

Everybody celebrates the signature. The paperwork is done, the handshake is warm, and most salespeople immediately turn their attention to the next new name on the list.

Most salespeople hear an objection and panic. The price is too high. I need to think about it. I need to talk to my partner. Their stomach drops, their voice speeds up, and they start talking faster — as if more words will fix what is actually a trust problem.

Every business owner I talk to wants the same thing: more leads. More clicks. More calls. More names on a list they have never met. Meanwhile, sitting right in their phone, their CRM, and their old quote book is a second business they are completely ignoring — people who already raised their hand once.

Early in my selling life, I had a boss who complained I was too slow.

Everybody thinks selling face to face is the hard part. It is not. Across a desk, the buyer does half your work for you — crossed arms, wandering eyes, a glance at the clock. The truth is written all over them.

Most salespeople treat referrals like a tip jar. The deal closes, the paperwork is signed, and then — almost as an afterthought — out it comes: "By the way, do you know anybody else who could use this?"

I've watched this movie a thousand times, and I can tell you exactly how it ends.

Most salespeople treat the close like the end of the race. They get the signature, celebrate, and move on to the next prospect. If you're a business owner, you've probably lived this — the rep who was all over you before the sale and vanished the day after.

When a business owner looks at advertising or media, they always start with the same questions. What's the price? What's the package? What's the reach? Who's the company?

The neuroscience of emotional contagion — and why your prospect's nervous system decides before their brain does.

I learned sales in the middle of chaos. The Wall Street days — phones ringing off the hook, desks buried in paperwork, managers walking the aisles to see who was dialing and who was just looking busy. If you weren't on the phone, you weren't working. It was that simple.

You've seen the number at the end of the month. Three, five, maybe ten thousand dollars spent on ads. The clicks came in. The phone rang. And yet the revenue barely moved.

Early in my career, I watched the top producer on the floor do something that made no sense to me. A client was ready to sign, and this closer said, "Hold on. Let's make sure this is actually the right move for you."

I want to tell you something that took me years to learn and cost me more money than I'd care to admit.

After thirty years of sitting across the table from buyers, I can tell you this: people almost never say what they actually mean.
