The Power of Out-Care

Everyone asks me what my secret is. Thirty years, half a dozen industries, and I keep closing. They expect some trick. Some line. Some psychological hack.

Here's the secret: I out-care everyone.

It's not a slogan. It's not on a coffee mug. It's how I operate, every single day, on every single call. I care more about the prospect's problem than they do. I care more about the follow-up than my competitor does. I care more about getting it right than getting it fast.

Out-caring is not about being nice. Nice is forgettable. Out-caring is about being invested. When a prospect tells me about their business, I'm not waiting for my turn to talk. I'm listening like my paycheck depends on understanding — because it does. I'm taking notes. I'm asking the second question, the one nobody else asks, the one that shows I was actually paying attention.

Most salespeople care about the commission. The prospect can smell it. They can feel when you're running them through a process versus when you're genuinely trying to solve their problem. And in a world where everyone is automating, templating, and AI-generating their outreach, the human who actually gives a damn stands out like a flare in the night.

I learned this selling advertising for a luxury magazine in Delray Beach. Five thousand dollars a week in ad sales, top producer, and I wasn't the smoothest talker on the team. I was the one who showed up. I was the one who remembered the client's daughter's graduation. I was the one who called back when I said I would — every time, no exceptions. Trust compounds. Care compounds.

Out-care means you do the work nobody sees. You research before the call. You prepare like it's the biggest deal of your life, even when it's not. You follow up when there's nothing in it for you yet. You tell the truth even when the truth might cost you the sale — because the truth is what builds the relationship that brings the next five sales.

Here's the paradox: the less you chase the commission, the more commissions chase you. When you out-care everyone, referrals show up. Repeat business shows up. Prospects stop shopping you against three competitors because you're not a vendor anymore — you're their guy.

The phone still works. But it only works if the person on the other end believes you actually care. So care more. Out-care everyone. That's the whole playbook.
